That is not to say that it’s plain sailing in Germany. In the time I’ve been here, I have been stared at curiously on several occasions, told I look like Oprah Winfrey , and been repeatedly pestered by a neighbour who was convinced a foul smell in her apartment must be my cooking.These are all familiar low level racist microaggressions informed by racist underpinnings. There are also occasional racist incidents reported in the news here.
The national narcissism that I experienced in the UK also significantly curtailed my short-term travel aspirations. So many times, I had an internal conversation about visiting a new destination only to play it safe and visit NYC again! In reality, some of the most racist and toxic experiences I’ve had in the UK have been at the hands of people who moved to London to buy what they couldn’t in their country – middle class-dom.
