Millie McAinsh, an 18 year old girl who is hospitalised and unable to walk, talk or eat has been left in a state of constant fear, as she believes she may die soon due to doctors failing to acknowledge her condition - severe myalgic encephalomyelitis .
Millie and her family strongly believed she has ME, despite it being difficult to diagnose. ME, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, is a severe multi-system disease that significantly affects an individual's physical capabilities and quality of life. In extreme cases, it can be fatal. Mayo Clinic explains repeated exposure to sensory stressors such as light and touch can push individuals with ME into a state of extreme exhaustion known as post-exertion malaise , often referred to as a "crash", which can completely shut down the body's functions. The clinic states: "It may take a person with ME/CFS days, weeks, or even months to return to their previous baseline after PEM.
Lucy describes the ordeal as "traumatising" and speaks of her daughter's daily pleas to return home. She explained: "I'm despairing because she's in hell, she wants to go home and she has verbalised this to doctors. But they're not seeking help from ME specialists we recommended who understand Millie's illness."
The family has also alleged doctors insist Millie needs to be sat upright for tube feeding a position they argue causes extreme discomfort to Millie, likening it to being "tortured".
