Great writer
The apogee of sports journalism. McIlvanney’s vividly evocative description of the Thrilla in Manila still brings a tear to the eye. The greatest. RIP
A complete Titan in the field. Thanks for everything Hugh.
No! A fantastic writer, some of his sports writing bordered on poetry.
STANDfanzine A true master of his craft.
RIP, a Journalistic giant
Perhaps ALL off your journalists should take a good long look in the mirror and try to replicate just 10% off his journalism...
His portrayal off the Lisbon Lions was simply outstanding...
flintcams A great writer may he rest in peace HH
An absolute titan of sports writing who set the bar so high for everyone else to pass under since. And his unmistakable accent came across in his writing, how is that possible?
SamWallaceTel Could have listened to him talk all day . Great journalist and will be sadly missed.
Quality writer. Sad loss.
The best.
I had the very great pleasure of enjoying his company once. He explained baseball to an Irishman. RIP.
dwright75 Oh no. He was one of the very best. RIP.
EJW40189335 Such an eloquent man and compelling writer. All that knowledge extinguished, but a huge body of work left behind for us to enjoy. RIP Hugh McIlvanney.
Condolences. Great sports writer
For once the superlatives aren’t hyperbole. The best sportswriter of this or any other generation.
And Cantwell. Legend.
I would have thought the Guardian could have summoned up a more inspirng adjective than 'veteran.'
What a writer. RIP Hugh.
He was one of the great sports writers
A true inspiration. I have piles of cuttings of his beautifully crafted words. It was a privilege - and a huge pleasure - to work with him when he came to the 1986 Australian Grand Prix. I was in awe of the man and yet he remained humble but totally professional. And fun!
Grew up reading him, a scintillating wordsmith and that voice...oozed knowledge and authority!
Very sad. Brilliant journalist. I remember a programme he did on great Scottish managers on the BBC. RIP
he was a giant ... great friend of Ali too... GeorgeForeman Peter_Fitz
A writing legend. RIP
One of the reasons I wanted to write about sport - a true artist of words 🖤
My Condolences to his friends and family, I am so very sorry for your loss.
As a young newspaper apprentice in 1980s I used to cut out McIlvanney columns in The Observer on Brady, Dalglish, McStay, Souness etc and paste them in a scrapbook & read them 100 times to see how he put the right words together in the right order - master craftsman of the trade.
Legend. RIP Hugh....
Sad
One of the greats. Will be sadly missed.
