Huge parts of Shetland for sale in 'rare' opportunity including private island

In what has been described as an "extremely rare" opportunity, a major section of the remote archipelago has just hit the market for offers over £1.3 million. According to the listing by Strutt & Parker, around 1,500 acres of land in total is for sale spread across three separate lots.

The first lot, named Graveland, is by far the biggest and also the most northern. It covers around 1,160 acres, and according to the listing is ecologically diverse.View gallery Among the features of the land are multiple lochs, coastal cliffs and "a substantial amount of peat." The estate agents have revealed that there is already an offer on the table for this lot.

Shetland's second largest island, Yell is home to a wealth of stunning and rugged scenery. Sandy beaches and moorland are aplenty, while the island also has a history dating back to Neolithic times — evidenced by 12 broch sites. Found off the west coast of Yell, which is home to a population of around 950, Holm West Sandwick is totally uninhabited by humans. However, it does feature diverse wildlife, with orcas and dolphins often spotted in its waters.
