‘The first agreement we should make is: don’t call them soap operas,” Dr Arzu Ozturkmen, who teaches oral history at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, scolds me. “We are very much against this.” What Turkey produces for television are not soap operas, or telenovelas, or period dramas: they are dizi. They are a “genre in progress”, declares Ozturkmen, with unique narratives, use of space and musical scores. And they are very, very popular.
Evet bravo 👏👏The best turkish show is ThePriceOfPassion SiyahBeyazAşk ibrahimçelikkol birceakalay KanalD KanalDsales
Celikkol_North The intricate storytelling is superb and the pyschology and character development in the tv shows are second to none. I would go as far that the Turkish writers are not afraid to write about social issues, controversial themes and current issues of the day.
Celikkol_North It has taken over many countries for years. We have been watching them for the last 15 years. Also, the Latin American fans, there is a definite cult following. There are so many FB fan clubs of many actors.
Women who have headscarves have longer worked in every realm of business life and studied in universities freely. Turkey, at this point, is now even more democratic and free. For the record, The wife and mother of Atatürk were both headscarfed! (3)
The fact, Western civilization that has always been shown itself as a more defender of freedom and humanitarian values should not evaluate such bans which had been implemented until the existing ruling power came to the power. (2)
It is a very long article nevertheless I mostly read it but there is a paragraph in which some expressions could not be accepted by Turkish pp, namely 'The veil – which Atatürk lambasted as a “spectacle that makes the nation an object of ridicule” – did not fare much better.'(1)
Wait till they start to broadcast the news with subtitles. The president and his drama are everywhere. It’s surreal y’all.
“It won’t be the end of the Turkish dizi invasion' -- true, and I'm here for it. PS: I read the entire Long Read!
How could this happens? Nobody in the world understand the bloody language.

Not ours. Might be more entertaining than current Scandi misery.
Nice article. In fact, the imagination of writers in Turkey, not just from the series sold to other countries.
Guardian, Turkish TV is taking over *my* world and I'm letting and watching it happen! I just... woop! But I've also been this melêe about Spanish telenovs before, South Korean and Bollywood as well -- I hope the Turks are here to stay. Mm-hm. OnlyTimeWillTell NumbersNeverLie
