A 66-year-old farmer invited women to come and live in the area – inadvertently starting a war with his neighbours, also in their sixties
He says he wasn’t looking for potential wives or partners when he spoke, and that his “call for women” was more of a provocative outburst than a real invitation. The latter started joking about there not being a single woman around and how a female presence might lift the mood, making life less dull. He says the reporter then wrote that he had made an official call-out for ladies, getting him in trouble with the other two bachelors.“I just want to live my life in peace, and though one might think there’s no place more peaceful than this hamlet, things aren’t as they appear.
Located in the region of Friuli close to the Slovenian border, Prepotischis was abandoned 46 years ago when roughly 20 families fled in search of a brighter future elsewhere, leaving behind empty homes that quickly started to crumble. When most locals left, the three bachelors, then in their twenties, decided to remain and look after their ancestral lands.
