What is happening there is symptomatic of the struggle across Spain, as the country attempts to cope with record arrivals amid a mixed response from Spaniards IN CARTAGENA, SPAIN – A short way from the lush green golf courses popular with British tourists in south-eastern Spain, Cartagena is playing host to visitors from a very different location: West Africa.
The reaction has been mixed, with the conservative mayor opposing the management of the temporary camp by Spain’s left-wing government, and residents saying migrants must find a place to live.Some 13,485 migrants from West Africa arrived in Spain by sea in the first two months of 2024, compared with 2,948 during the same period last year, a rise of 357.4 per cent.

He sends money back to his family in Gambia but wants to make his future in Spain.
