The couple’s visible strain, and openness about what a hard time they are having, was especially hard to stomach given the backdrop of some of the poorest countries in the world- like Angola and Malawi. Though their mental health struggles are not to be diminished, you couldn’t help but feel they jarred somewhat, against the extreme poverty and violence around them.
There has also been criticism of their candidness - Meghan on the brink of tears, stating that no one has asked if she is ok, Harry all-but-confirming a rift with his brother. Royal experts have cautioned this could cause monumental issues for the pair as the comments can be seen as an implicit criticism of the royal family itself. After all - why dismantle the institution that has made you who you are? It seems ungrateful, and disrespectful.
Meghan flouts all of our preconceptions - not just - as is most discussed - the fact that she is a woman of colour, or that she is American, or a former actress, but that she refuses to stay quiet and she refuses to ‘put up and shut up’ with the issues she is faced with. But surely, being open about the struggles they face, makes them admirable? Harry has been praised for this type of honesty before, and we are slowly seeing more of it.
It’s easy to think that Meghan and Harry are complaining about a privileged life. After all, many new mothers struggle, as Meghan says, but many mothers do not have the unlimited resources of Meghan. The counter to this, is the fact that privilege does not exempt you from
