Sweeping cuts were confirmed during a meeting at at the Council House on Monday night

Last night's vote to confirm sweeping cuts across Nottingham was a dark moment for the people of our city. Councillors, through gritted teeth and some through tears, voted in favour of the proposals during a gruelling seven-and-a-half hour meeting at the Council House on Monday, March 4.

"The council has a duty to set a legal and balanced budget and we expect all Labour group members to support proposals to set a responsible and legal budget," the party said in a statement. While blame for the cuts has been shifted between city council mistakes and chronic underfunding from the central government, the devastating effects on the city and its people are certain.

Higher council tax and other costs Libraries will close Council leader David Mellen has previously acknowledged that closing libraries will be inevitable to generate the savings required. One campaigner previously told Nottinghamshire Live only three of the current 15 libraries would be left open, which are expected to be the new Central Library the upcoming Sherwood Library and Aspley Library.

Families of residents living at the homes in St Ann's and Bestwood have called for the council to halt the "distressing" proposals, which the authority expects will save around £300,000 over four years.
