Sweden’s announcement this week that it is to build a series of animal bridges is the latest in global efforts to help wildlife navigate busy roads

Every April, Sweden’s main highway comes to a periodic standstill. Hundreds of reindeer overseen by indigenous Sami herders shuffle across the asphalt on the E4 as they begin their journey west to the mountains after a winter gorging on the lichen near the city of Umeå. As Sweden’s main arterial road has become busier, the crossings have become increasingly fractious, especially if authorities do not arrive in time to close the road.

I love this idea! It's the least the wildlife deserves.

How absolutely wonderful - how forward thinking on behalf of our precious wildlife. Why can't we learn from these other countries?

Can only happen in a country where respect for living things matters. In the USA, hunters would be lined up for a shoot.

Would they know is for them or would they be confused 🤷🏽‍♀️

CurlyQ42 And I think they look good. Aesthetically pleasing bridges

this should be done in every country around the world.

looks like the proposed Garden Bridge. Thank goodness it wasn't built so the wildlife at Westminster is somewhat contained therein.

Great idea !!! In london we had a similar idea so humans could walk across the thames on a new Garden bridge with plants and trees This was canned by the Mayor as he is opposition to the Government ! He did However increase his PR budget to 2 million pounds

I know it was fun, but we’re not going through that again. Regards, Three Billy Goats Gruff

I had crabs once and they crossed over to a lot of different people. That's wildlife crossing too, right?

I seem to recall this being done somewhere with result that predators would take to hanging out at the far end to pick off animals that have crossed over. Anyone else remember this?

Even reindeer bears?

Green Britain: Help us create a haven for nature – hope to create nightingale sanctuaryIMAGINE a sanctuary where the nightingale, nature's most accomplished chorister, could sing again. A place where one of the most rapidly declining birds, the lesser spotted woodpecker, could rebuild its numbers. A haven where insect-eating sundew plants thrive alongside orchids and Dartford Warblers and churring nightjars.

Welsh language centre partners with Duolingo in million speaker goalOnline course being used to help reach government target was created after letter to the Guardian I started this course about year ago, because I live close to the Welsh border. I abandoned it because it was a badly constructed course compared to other Duolingo courses (I am doing 5 atm). How are people finding it now? Great news, but the Welsh government’s target is unambitious. The target should be 1 million by 2030 (which we’re pretty well on track for) and 50% by 2050. Getting to 50% of the population would be a hugely significant milestone.
