Buying your first home is always celebrated as a milestone, but I can’t help but feel that because of my background, everyone I meet is especially happy for me. The builders literally patted me on the back when they realised I was doing it by myself, as did the cleaners doing the end of tenancy deep clean when I told them I’d grown up a stone’s throw away. The cashiers at the bank told me I should be extremely proud, as they noted how long I’d held my savings account with them.

This shouldn’t be controversial, but it is increasingly becoming a point of contention. According to the British Social Attitudes Survey,identify as working class. This strikes me as unsurprising: the truth is, the less working class you are presently, the more you tend to claim it. Throughout school and university, if there was one thing I wanted to obscure, it was money troubles.

The British class system is rigid, whilst simultaneously being amorphous. It’s a complicated combination of things such as how much you earn, how much you have saved, how you speak, where you grew up, where you were educated, where your parents were educated, what they do as a job, whether they own their home, whether that home has a garden.
