KATH and David Crampton watched in horror as doctors worked frantically to save their baby’s life.
In a horrific killing spree, the nurse committed murder either by insulin or potassium overdose, or injecting an air bubble into the bloodstream, which can cause lung collapse. “This is a woman who has no empathy, no conscience. She does not feel bad when she hurts other people. Vulnerable children were simply a means to an end, and she knew trauma would guarantee an audience.”
For several months Allitt appeared to be keen to learn the new skills. But it didn’t take long before care turned to killing. Consultants on the ward were confused by Liam’s dramatic relapse, and there were questions asked as to why the alarms didn’t sound in time. One of those victims was Timothy Hardwick, 11, who had cerebral palsy and was admitted after an epileptic fitBut nobody considered it could be a nurse’s fault, so Allitt continued her work unsupervised.
All of them were considered stable and recovering before suddenly needing life-saving treatment. All the babies had at some point been left in the care of Beverley Allitt. She died two days later at home from what appeared to be cot death, but an autopsy showed it was an insulin overdose. Due to a disagreement with senior staff about the level of threat to patients, the call was never made.
The nurse was suspended from duties immediately as investigators began to examine each individual case, and the one that stood out to them was Paul Crampton. During a search at Allitt’s house, the missing pages from the ward allocation book were found in a drawer. Finally the investigation was complete, and Allitt was charged with four counts of murder as well as 11 of attempted murder and 11 of grievous bodily harm.
"No matter how much you don’t believe me, and I know you don’t, I don’t care. I can’t bloody lie to you. I’m not going to sit here and lie to you for days on end while I get questioned.”Further background checks revealed Allitt’s behaviour was now also consistent with Munchausen’s by proxy. The personality disorder would explain how she began to kill in order to satisfy her twisted desire to be noticed.
Episode 1 of Dangerous medical professionals who kill. Not all are good. I am so glad this is televised again, to remind people.
Just think, she was a Nurse.
