A government loan package will mean a £200 cut in household bills - but the money will have to be repaid.

But it has raised concerns among providers because the money would still have to be paid back eventually.

Pilippe Commaret, the firm's managing director for customers at EDF said: "Ballooning wholesale gas prices are driving energy bills up and customers need government to act now, especially to support those most in need. That has intensified calls in recent weeks for the government to step in to help struggling households.

I don’t know why energy bill should rise to this extent, or the government doing what they are doing, this is not just going to effect working class people it will also effect a lot of business due to our lack of spending.

For everyone or just them that don't work etc

Does anyone if this is for Wales also?

That'll buy a lot of dope

Warmonger on Ukraine doesn't help energy prices, Terry.

But we will have to pay it back!

Help with your debt by giving you another debt, Marvellous

Probably £200 they are going to fund themselves via taxes. We know how it works.

Big companies getting tax payer funded loans! Great solution! FFS Why is it always socialism for the big businesses and capitalism for the rest of us?!

more social engineering from bbc

Server, that’s universal. Thought Conservatives were against that for months now.

That’s Monday sorted then.

Your article waffles on, but no real details about this £200 🤷🏼‍♀️

Conservative party political broadcasts. Use the word ‘loan’ in the headline. It is a loan, not a grant. They called the scheme “rebate-and-clawback”. Interesting word choice. Not ‘repay’: ‘clawback’. Expect civil/criminal sanctions for non-repayment hitting the very poorest.

The government is addicted to one-off interventions. Just cut taxes! Simplify. Deregulate. Grow the economy.

Oh great, a loan we have to pay back to cover 10% of the average rise in cost per household! How generous!

which the energy companies will then be able to claw back from the public

Is every couple now mixed race in the U.K. or is the picture just BBC liberal patronisation ?

Annual UK grocery bill could rise by £180 amid cost of living squeezePrices rose 3.8% over the four weeks to 23 January compared with same period in 2021, says Kantar A dónde vamos a llegar subiendo todo £180 more over a year? You should be so lucky. That works out as £3.46 weekly. Meat & dairy alone are seeing prices increases that outstrip that. And it's the scarcity of flour, difficulty in procuring fresh produce and collapsing fish sector that are REALLY seeing price hikes
