Hakeem Jeffries, a 52-year-old congressman from New York, unanimously won an intra-party vote to succeed Nancy Pelosi, the first female speaker of the House, as minority leader

, most managers have short tenures and are forgettable. Longevity is the key to legacy. So too when it comes to party management in Congress. In the 20 years since Nancy Pelosi took control as Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, more than 500 fellow party members have worked under her management. But that era is now closing.

Being leader of the minority party, which is largely disempowered in the parliamentary-style House, is at least an easier task than whipping the majority into shape. Even before their turn in power formally begins in January 2023, Republicans are already learning this lesson., their current leader in the House, has been desperate for the job since he failed to obtain it in 2015. And the California congressman might fail again.

All the acting and auditioning means that, though most Republicans find Mr McCarthy perfectly agreeable, many do not respect him. Given the Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the new Congress, only five defections within his party would be needed to deny him the speakership. And five Republicans have already said they will not vote for him. Most are well to the right of the would-be speaker—despite Mr McCarthy’s decision to start courting them months ago .

Hey Economist, fire the wokies you have writing for you now; it a new world on twitter. You can comfortably go back to being real journalists now.

Love Hakeem! Presidential and unforgettable!

Interesting that the economist doesn’t bring up the fact that he is an election denier…is that because he is black or a democrat?

More importantly, Hakeem Jeffries is an election denier.

He's also a great election denier. Which I thought the Dems shunned.

Everyone should vote for this dude because he’s black not because of his qualifications

More race based division from liberal hypocrite media!!! Brainwashing at its best!

The ElectionDenier

Who cares about race Only liberals!! Isn’t merit important?

I’d rather look at the stars

Let's watch his net worth skyrocket!!

Here come the ultra left Progressives

52?!?!

Isn’t he an election denier!?🤔

After all the decrying of election denialism by Dems, isn't it ironic that they chose one as their leader?

I want a competent leader that doesn’t make it their life’s mission to lie and manipulate the public . I want a REAL leader . They done f*d up and now want to pass blame for the inevitable doom.
