Hilary Mantel And Bernardine Evaristo On WomensPrize For Fiction Shortlist

It’s a strong list, and hard to pick a favourite. Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other has form, of course, having won last year’s Man Booker Prize. But Hilary Mantel’s The Mirror and the Light has been the literary event of 2020 so far. The other four have, naturally, been critically acclaimed too. Meaning there’s only one way to pick your winner: read the lot!

Martha, who is joined on the panel by Scarlett Curtis, Melanie Eusebe, Viv Groskop, and Paula Hawkins, says: ‘We are all living in challenging, sad and complex times so incredible stories provide hope, a moment of escape and a point of connection now more than ever. Choosing the shortlist was tough - we went slowly and carefully and passions ran high - just as you would want in such a process. But we are all so proud of these books - all readers will find solace if they pick one up.
