The sad announcement was made just a day after it was revealed the star had been forced to pull out of her pantomime commitments to undergo surgery

The sudden news of her death comes only a day after the star told fans she was 'well' and hoping to be 'back to normal soon.' Her assurances followed an accident after which she had been rushed to hospital for surgery.

Tributes described her as a ‘national treasure' and a 'real legend of the British entertainment scene" from her long-term agent Phil Belfield, who said: “She was one of a kind and a unique talent loved by many. She is gone far too soon. Our hearts are broken!Norwich born Ruth shot to fame in the 80s for playing Chief Yellowcoat Gladys Pugh in the hit BBC comedy Hi de Hi! between 1980 to 1988.

"To cut a long story short, I spent two weeks in hospital in Dublin and then another week at home.
