The refugees minister has appealed to councils to help house 10,500 Afghans currently living in UK hotels at a cost to the taxpayer of £1m a day.
Mohammad, who is in his 40s, said: "I want to settle and integrate but how can I when we are living in a hotel for months and months? I can't start my life properly." He says his wife of 20 years is struggling after sharing one hotel room between the four of them since September. Afghan families are being placed in temporary hotels until social housing can be found, according to the Local Government Association.

These people should be at the bottom of EVERY queue. British ppl can’t get to see a doctor, registrar with a dentist…can’t get housed. It’s a 15 year waiting list in some places … immigrants can’t jump the queue. First lesson in being British. Play fair and learn to queue.

It is a shame that we just do not have the houses for people who have been on waitlist for a long time as it is, we can’t magic them out of thin air! At least they have a safe place to stay even if it is in a hotel.

The gov't is dumping the costly burden onto councils. £20,000 per person over 3 yrs isn't enough. In 2016 the EU calculated €50,000 per person per year, to cover the immediate and longer-term costs for dealing with an asylum-seeker, including schools, medical care and housing.
