podcast: “My children ruined my career. I love them and they complete me, but in terms of pop-stardom, they totally ruined it.Cue the Mummy Mafia coming out in droves saying how terrible it is to say your kids “ruined” your career. It infers. How refreshing to hear from a woman that her choice to raise her kids stopped her career progression. Because, in my experience at least, it’s true.I was born in the 70s and became a teenager in the 90s.
I was offered jobs back in offices in central London and stints consulting for exciting new publications. The salary was good each time. But every time I had to say the same thing: sorry I can’t leave my kids. My husband had a contract as a musician and, while some may call me old fashioned, but I felt my children’s place was with their mother in the early years. We definitely took a hit financially, but I felt I’d never get these early years again. It meant I saw other childfree people and some parents take those jobs and scale their career ladder. I remained a freelancer – a productive one with regular work, thank goodness – but my career stayed in second gear.
But what would I have missed? Those first teeth, first school plays, first sports days. I wasn’t on a train or in an office. I was there for them all. When my kids became ill at school and the phone rang, I’d be there in minutes to bring them home and bundle them up on the sofa in a blanket in my arms. When they suffered nasty comments from friends, or a ticking off from a teacher, I was always the first they told, their confidante.
