The starry new Netflix adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel is bilge, writes Fiona Sturges – but it is perfect fodder for those of us with a masochistic streak

; some may reach the end and wonder what all the carping was about. But it is perfect fodder for a hate-watch, a practice reserved for those of us with a masochistic streak and too much time on our hands. The hate-watch isn’t a new thing: I’m pretty sure it’s what all three hours and 30 minutes of James Cameron’sat the cinema last year, despite critical notices that served as public health warnings.

FionaSturges There's so many good things to watch and never enough time. I suppose hate watching is OK if it's on while I'm doing something else more valuable ... pauses to think of something less valuable ... but sometimes things just have to be switched off.

FionaSturges 'Very least equal?!!!!' Surely they were hoping for 50% as good ... I mean, c'mon! Hitch's Rebecca with Fontaine, Olivier, Sanders and the outstanding Anderson couldn't be touched. They must have known that.
