New Sky series The Tattooist of Auschwitz stars Harvey Keitel in the story of one man’s experience of the concentration camp where more than a million people were murdered during World War II.
The series also features Lali as an widowed old man, six decades later, as he meets writer Heather Morris and tells her his story, finally confronting the traumas of his time in the camp while also reliving the love he experienced in the darkest of times. Lali and Gita were a real couple, Lali and Gita Solokov, who met at Auschwitz and survived the concentration camp. The real-life Lali told Heather his story following the death of his wife Gita, which Heather turned into a bestselling novel. Lali and Gita’s son Gary Sokolov has given his blessing to the series adaptation.
“The respect that was given to my father and my mother and their story was beyond anything I could have imagined,” he said. “I really hope the world feels the same way. It’s what I wanted for my parents: for the world to know their story. So yes, it’s fantastic. Am I allowed to cry?”
