There are currently no openly gay male players in any of Germany’s professional leagues A group of male professional footballers in Germany are planning to come out as gay on the same day in May. According to German weekly newspaper Preußische Allgemeine Zeitung, several professional players across the nation are planning to come out on May 17 – the Friday before the final weekend of the Bundesliga season.

Former Germany international, Thomas Hitzlsperger, who played in the Premier League for Aston Villa, West Ham and Everton, came out as gay in 2014 a year after his playing career had ended and has revealed he was advised to keep quiet during his time as a footballer.
