Greater Manchester Police officers have been told not to wear their uniform in the parade by Manchester Pride later this month.
Off-duty officers were also denied the opportunity to wear their uniforms in the parade last year and were instead asked to wear 'civilian clothing' or t-shirts with the Progress Pride flag by pride themselves. Pictures from Pride in 2019, before Mr Watson became Chief Constable, showed officers from Greater Manchester Police taking part in the parade with patches, epaulettes and lanyards in rainbow colours - the rainbow flag being a symbol of LGBT+ pride dating back to the late seventies.
"We have kindly requested that GMP officers and staff participating in the Parade do not wear their uniform. This decision has not been made lightly, but with profound care and consideration by the Board of Trustees. In 2021 and 2022 we conducted one of our most comprehensive community consultations and released the Pride In Our Future report detailing the findings.
