A grandmother has become the first woman in Britain to be prosecuted over the XL Bully ban - a year after she rescued the dog when it was dumped close to death at the seaside.

Sefton Magistrates' Court heard Fitzpatrick - who lives off state benefits - got just £300 per month in income and could not afford to apply for the registration which would have exempted the dog from being automatically put to sleep.
Chris Howard, prosecuting, said: 'The incident was on February 18 of this year. Police attended the home address of the defendant in relation to an unrelated matter. Whilst at the address police identified a large dog which was locked in one of the rooms.
