Leon Mann: ‘We need people in power to show they care about diversity’The former BBC and ITV presenter has become a campaigner for greater BAME representation in British sports media and is determined to see radical change to a stark issue The issue is entirely about class, not skin tone. A diverse mix of backgrounds is needed in the media, rather than the usual braying middle class Oxbridge suspects who clog up the system. The level of racism is apalling in Guardian articles recently. Please don't push identity politics, it's wrong. Try to focus on merit instead. You can enumerate fields of human activity with unequal distribution of races ad infinitum, that's getting boring. What the Caster Semenya v IAAF ruling means for women in sportHistorically we have defined humans as binary “male” or “female”, based on what we knew then about genes and anatomy. This was a clear and useful way of categorising sports participation. But 21st-century medical and social sciences have since progressed, and we now know that both biological sex and sociocultural gender are much more complicated than that, says Sheree Bakker
