Ministers will now back calls to empower regulators to ensure people can access paper money.

Campaigners have welcomed the move, and said cash remains a crucial resource for millions of people, including those less technologically able who are less likely to use online banking.

The closure of local bank branches and a decline in free-to-use ATMs have seen campaigners and opposition MPs call on ministers to take action. “That is why we are bringing forward new laws that will ensure everyone has reasonable access to be able to withdraw and deposit cash for free. “With bank branches and ATMs continuing to close at rapid rates, those who are not yet ready or able to make the switch to digital payments can’t be left behind.
