Sensationalised headline. Shame on you. The actual content says 'some companies are *starting* to care *less* about formal university degrees. Google aren’t *so* interested in degrees' emphasis added. Google cares a lot about degrees but maybe, is starting to care a little less.

There is a world of difference between the technical skills required to build IT systems for commerce and the IT skills taught in academia. When companies have to spend time un-teaching graduates, it is often quicker to go for bright non-graduates. First-hand experience here.

They put a visit to University right up there with a visit to the dentist in terms of importance...
