Google and Facebook ‘must be tamed’ for the good of the world, Barack Obama’s former chief economic advisor says

TECH giants such as Google and Facebook need to be reined to curb their “bullying tactics” and give consumers more choice, an independent inquiry has found.

But that had come at the cost of the increasing dominance of a few companies, the former economic adviser to Barack Obama argued. The review calls for the government to increase competition in the digital sector by setting up a new competition unit and strengthening outdated laws. Opening markets up would also lead to new services that revolutionise how we use digital apps and programmes.

The new unit should give people more control over their data by enabling people to switch between platforms more easily.
