Glenn Irwin fought back the tears as he wrote his name into the history books on Saturday. The Carrick rider claimed his 10th Superbike win at the North West 200 to break the record held by Joey Dunlop and Michael Rutter.
"When I first arrived here I think my talent carried me to some wins, and then I had that weird patch in my career in the British Championship where I lost a lot of form and still managed to win here, probably helped by it being a wet race that year. But since 2020 I have worked my ass off, in training, nutrition and mindset.
"I felt comfortable in the race and knew where Davey is strong. We can go to another level," Irwin added. "I am a massive Joey fan and Dunlop fan. A big part of me feels if is wrong to celebrate taking a record of Joey's, but I am really proud to have it."
