Girl, 11, drowns & pal critical after one leapt in lake to save the other

AN 11-year-old girl drowned in a reservoir and her 10-year-old friend is fighting for life after one leapt in to save the other at a birthday party.

Cops say one of the youngsters fell into the water at the Trasona reservoir in Asturias, northern Spain, and the other dived in to try and save her.Both were fished out of the reservoir by a retired police officer who was canoeing and tried to revive them until the emergency services arrived. The two girls were enjoying a birthday party when they went to the water's edge and one of them slipped in.Both girls are of Romanian nationality and live in Spain, one in Oviedo and the other in Pravia.The younger girl is in the children's ICU in a serious condition.

The girls were with their parents in the recreation area next to the reservoir when they went missing at about 8.30pm.

Heartbreaking. I feel for their families. This is why it is better to be over protective parent and check where they play always.
