Thousands of drivers at Llandudno Junction pass it every day while travelling to and from the A55 and A470, yet its true purpose remains a mystery to many. During World War II, Marl Cold Stores played a crucial role as a food storage facility, essentially acting as an enormous fridge. These days, H.L. Motors uses the building, which has since ceased to function for refrigeration, though many original features are still preserved.
He explained that during wartime, the Government built up to 19 depots like this one to store food brought in from ships, preparing for a conflict of "unknown length". The entire structure was designed to be "hermetically sealed", reports North Wales Live. Adrian Hughes of the Home Front Museum in Llandudno shed more light on the significance of this military asset."American soldiers used it from 1944. They even brought their own engines with them to distribute the food and tootle around North Wales."
