is quantifying a pressing personal issue. It’s Thursday, 6pm at one of the dimly lit bars off Bethnal Green Road and Gia darts an answer back, quick as a flash, after thinking for approximately five seconds about who the lesbian role modelis. ‘King Princess, one hundred per cent,’ she says. Gia recently caught the captivating New York pop star on stage. ‘And, oh my God, she was amazing. It was like watching an Eighties video of kids screaming at bands.
Gia Ford is a made-up name. Or at least half of it is. ‘I have seen the Angelina Jolie film and it is absolutely amazing. But Gia wasn’t chosen because of it,’ she explains. ‘I wanted to create this impenetrable package that people believe in. The name felt like it needed to happen. Also, Gia Ford ended up being GF, which is girlfriend. Which is kind of what the whole world is.’Gia wrote her first song, ‘You Wanna Rock’, at five years old.
Gia is currently working on her debut full-length song suite. Song-writing for her is about finding clarity in emotion. ‘I feel a lot of the time, what you’re trying to do is tell your feelings to someone and to get them to understand them.’ She’s learning by a process of elimination to edit out the metaphors, to cut straight to the quick. ‘I’ve lost my ambition a little bit along the way with this,’ she says. ‘It’s quite a journey. But I’m coming into my artistry now.
She’s putting a band together to take the whole package out on the road soon. Her one condition for members? ‘It just can’t be a bunch of white, straight, cis men,’ she says. ‘I don’t want to perpetuate that any more. It’s just ridiculous.’ Stepping out on stage will mean facing a new brand of fear. ‘But I feel like the songs will take on a new meaning. My life has been so digital so far, which is the same as pretty much every faction of my life. I want something human to emerge out of all this.
