George Russell: Dropping the zero-pod philosophy won’t make Mercedes fasterGeorge Russell has urged Mercedes to stick with the zero-pod philosophy, wary that changing the concept will not make the car faster but “rather the opposite”.
Toto Wolff has yet to say whether Mercedes are committed to the zero-pod concept, the motorsport boss admitting several times earlier in the year they were open to change. “I think we just have to stay open,” Russell said, quoted by Motorsport.com. “But I don’t think changing the vehicle concept will make us faster – rather the opposite, to be honest.
“We did a good job [in Hungary] and both showed good pace, whereas earlier in the season we finished races a minute behind first place.
No but it will most likely make the car easier to develop & eradicate most of the issues that the current car has like tyre warm up, lack of downforce, Porpoising/bottoming out all of which will make the car inherently faster.
Williams dropped zero-pods and got a couple tenths. Aston and McLaren adopted RB style downswept pods for decent gains. Not sure why Merc is still sticking to the failing base concept other than pride & sunk cost fallacy. It's a waste of resources to continue to develop it.
