We’re aware that all sounds a little depressing, so we’ve got some good news to balance out the bad. According to new research, there are still some places in the UK where rent prices are reasonable, so if you want to get more for your money you might be interested in making the move.

reports that the research comes from Open Property Group, using salary data from the Office for National Statistics to analyse the affordability of rent in 49 cities.“Why I’ll probably never own a home, or even be able to afford rent when I’m older” As many people will know, rent can feel disproportionately high when it’s taking up a large amount of your monthly wage. This is why the research looks at housing which would amount to 30% or less of the average single person’s wage in a particular place, deeming this as a more acceptable percentage.

The results show that the north of England is home to more cost-effective housing, with most of the cities on the list located in the north. Durham comes out on top, averaging at £493 a month for single person accommodation based on what the average salary is for that city. Next up it’s Liverpool, with a slightly more expensive £499 average rent price which equals 24% of the average salary.
