The former Labour MP says he is retiring after 32 years representing Leicester East.

The Labour politician had been facing suspension from the Commons for six months after he was found to have"expressed willingness" to purchase cocaine for others.

Mr Vaz, who was Leicester East's MP for 32 years, said he had decided to retire, adding:"It has been an honour and a privilege to serve my constituency since I came to the city in 1985."I want to thank the people of Leicester East for their absolute loyalty and support. Leicester and especially the people of Leicester East will always be in my heart."

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn reacted by describing Mr Vaz as"among the pioneering group of black and Asian Labour MPs elected in 1987".Mr Corbyn added:"Keith has made a substantial and significant contribution to public life, both as a constituency MP for the people of Leicester and for the Asian community across the country.More from Politics

General election: Labour 'spending splurge' would cost extra £1.2tn, Tories claimThe Conservative Party says that paying for Labour's plans is equivalent to funding the NHS for nine years. The politics of hatred will not be beaten if I walk away from Labour | Jess PhillipsThe Labour party is not perfect, but I have seen in my own life how it is the greatest vehicle for positive social change The Nazis were also anti-Semitic and brought about radical social change But you won’t be complicit in it jessphillips . Shame on you. 'Talk is cheap' Philips love the attention afforded by being an MP and will never give it up. It doesn’t matter what cesspit Labour becomes. The extremist fringes of Labour are the mainstream and any principled MP would walk.
