As Gary Lineker's opposition to the government’s Illegal Migration Bill hit headlines, Lineker seemed on the brink of becoming something else: a Twitter saint. This is a profoundly unhealthy development ✒️ KateMaltby for ipaperviews

Is it wrong? Is it offensive to Jews? Some think so – Grant Shapps, who supports the policy, tweeted: “As a Jewish cabinet minister I need no lessons about 1930s Germany from Gary Lineker”. Regular readers will know I care deeply about, and I share the concern of many Jews that comparisons to the Holocaust can have the effect of downplaying its specific evil.

What is a problem is that Lineker has chosen the easy way to contemporary sainthood: snide tweets, but no intellectual contribution to how we might solve a substantive policy issue. Like most Twitter celebs, he finds rhetorical gestures so much easier. The Rwanda policy is inhumane. But the world’s migration crisis isn’t going away. Lineker has stressed on Twitter that the UK doesn’t take in significant numbers of people classed as refugees. This is true.

KateMaltby ipaperviews Much better to be 1930s Germany

KateMaltby ipaperviews Nonsense. He’s as entitled as anyone - blessed with a platform or not - to call out this horrendous legislation. Denying him that right because - as you seem to suggest - he’s a stupid “ex-footballer” feeds all the bile these vile Tories hunger for. Unnecessary. Silly. Wrong.

KateMaltby ipaperviews Congratulations on supporting fascism...

KateMaltby ipaperviews What he said was factually accurate. You even confirm that in your article. The media are the ones who need to look at themselves. Not ex footballers who make succinct statements of fact.

KateMaltby ipaperviews As a devoted reader, I am surprised and disappointed with your tweet Kate.

KateMaltby ipaperviews Give him a Fxxking break…he said what we all think

Minister says Gary Lineker needs a 'red card' for comparing government migrant crackdown to Nazi GermanyA minister has called for Gary Lineker to be shown a ‘red card’ after he compared Suella Braverman’s migrant crackdown to Nazi Germany. And in true Nazi fashion the government minister calls for some kind of punishment for having this valid opinion… Free speech only for people who agree with me. Calling for critics of the government to be silenced is exactly what the Nazis did... Won't be long before Robert Jenrick is prancing around in his brown shirt.
