US retailer Gap could close all of its own UK stores, putting thousands of jobs at risk, as it mulls shifting its operations to franchise-only in Europe.Gap could also close its European distribution centre in Rugby.
The retailer, whose sales have been falling in recent years, reported a £740m loss in the three months to May due to coronavirus disruption. Instead of operating its own stores, Gap said it was looking at whether to move to a franchise model."As we conduct the review, we will look at transferring elements of the business to interested third parties as part of a proposed partnership model expansion," said Mark Breitbard, head of Gap brand global.
Clothing retailers have been hit hard by the coronavirus crisis. As well as temporary shop closures during lockdown, they have had to contend with lower footfall and an accelerated shift to online shopping which has been capitalised on by specialists such as Asos and Boohoo.
No no no. Shopping is a social thing, one of life little pleasures is browsing and chatting to staff.
We will drink to that 🍻
HiImArmando the saddest day ever! 😭🥺😂
They opened a store in Slough when I was about 11 or 12 and it was the coolest, most modern thing my child eyes had ever seen. 20 years later and they're still selling the same stuff - basics in bland colours that can be bought literally anywhere else for half the price.
Has anybody bought GAP since 1995 ?
Anyone getting Auton vibes DoctorWho 😂
Clothes are overpriced tat
Another Far East sweatshop manufacturer.
I don't think I have ever considered buying anything from a Gap store, it seemed quite expensive.
Why focus your headline on UK stores when the closures will Europe wide?
I really feel for clothes shops at the most of the clothes shops I buy from are out of town and til I can try clothes on instore I won't be buying any it would be to much of a hassle having to take them back
Their store in Wimbledon already closed.
Wills_93 Bet your gutted mind
😮
The futures bright the futures NoDealBrexit But that starts next year eh?
Load of rubbish and to expense for what it is
I haven't seen a gap for ages anyway. Will we notice?
Does anyone shop here anymore anyway
No gap in the market? How dreadful!
Surprised they are still trading to be honest 🤷♀️
Thought Gap has disappeared from UK streets ages ago tbh
I am mortified - who are Gap ?

Long live real shopping stay at homes continue and get fatter.
Whoever shops at Gap could always go and shop in M&S judging by the clothes they sell.
I thought they already closed
Surprised they're still open...
That will leave a gap in the high street. There you go, I did it.
A bit misleading … They are shifting to a franchised model
Not another gap in the high street....
Online shopping is good until websites get hacked and your data and credit card information is stolen. Global governments want to push for online shopping. That was one of the reasons for pandemic, lockdown, restrictions so that businesses close stores & move online.
Never shopped in one 🤷♂️
'...and shift to a franchise model' So basically they'll be closing all company-owned stores and allow people to purchase a franchise.
Bad news for all those people still living in the 1990s I guess 🤷🏻♂️
Why is the majority of everyone you interview BAME? That’s not representative of the UK percentage.

Never been in one.
The high street was in trouble before the pandemic, now its getting utterly ravaged. It's not surprising that many stores are closing, but it's a simple fact that everyone is shopping online - because it's cheaper and currently safer.
Who shops at GAP? Thought they were gone years ago
Sorry for the staff but for me it’s brand I have little time for. Gap 👋👋👋👋
tell gap to be one of the few stores to stop mandating masks and watch how busy they get
More lost jobs due to UK draconian measures.
All this closing stores cutting back, running away from high streets, closing every thing down will be folly ! When this is over those who stay and fight will flourish! We can’t all stay indoors for ever! WeNeedToThink
Who shops at Gap anyway?
Only place that sells jeans that look n fit right. First world problems, I suppose. (Makes note to stock up🤓)
Oh no! Who's going to fill the... uh... empty space?
First Benneton - then Gap. What is the world coming to
Everything should be online now. Why pay for rent when you can send stuff directly from the warehouse? It saves money and safer for everyone.
🥱
Amazon's Jeff Bezos cheers on the Great Reset and the demise of the high street. Wake up sheeple.
Can't be a Gap in the market for it
The only reason Gap existed was to sell preppy hoodies to the middle classes for high prices... Those shoppers have since found Primart.
