A judge warned today that the 'frequency and levels of violence' between gangs risked turning idyllic towns into no-go areas as he jailed two teenagers for a 'brazen' murder in broad daylight.
'Time and time again, I've said in open court that the sentencing remarks of judges need to be reported so the public become more aware about the dangers of knife crime. Hammett, of Rushmere St Andrew who was 18 at the time of the attack, had been forced to move to Ipswich on police bail conditions for his role in a violent nightclub brawl in which two police officers and three door staff were assaulted.
'But on that afternoon, all that he was doing was simply being with his friends, walking in that busy shopping area. He had no idea of the tragic events about to unfold.' Opening the trial, prosecutor Andrew Jackson said the premeditated murder was motivated by a 'deep-rooted rivalry' between gangsThe killers ran in different directions afterwards and disposed of their weapons and clothing.
Hammett refused to give evidence during the five-week trial but his lawyers said he denied being the man who attacked Mr Quigley. When arrested, his phone had been wiped and returned to factory settings.
