The 23-time Grand Slam singles’ winner added: “Unfortunately I wasn’t ready to win Wimbledon this year. And I don’t know if I will be ready to win New York. But I’m going to try. And the lead-up tournaments will be fun.” The writing appeared to be on the wall, when the American claimed her first victory in a year since last year’s French Open at the National Bank Open on Monday. She suggested at retirement by telling reporters: “I love playing, though… but, you know, I can’t do this forever. Sometimes you just want to try your best to enjoy the moments, and do the best that you can.”

Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, but was raised in Los Angeles, where she learned tennis, alongside her sister Venus, from her father on public courts. She turned professional in 1995, when she was 14 years-old.23 doubles titles and two mixed doubles titles. This includes 39 Grand Slam titles – 23 singles titles, 14 doubles titles and two mixed doubles titles. She is also a four-time Olympic gold medalist.
