Another Reddit user pointed out that HBO let the cast pick their favourite sigils back in season one which accounts for why Sophie has a dragon, she just liked the look of them back in 2011. The concept of ‘secret Targaryens’ and ‘Targaryen pretenders’ are explored at length in the A Song of Ice and Fire books, however, which give some credence to this notion.
