Curt Johnson has been sentenced to six months in jail as he admitted breaching safety regulations after Ava-May Littleboy was thrown higher than a house when the inflatable exploded.

The horror incident came while the toddler was enjoying a day out with her family at Gorleston-on-Sea, in Norfolk, on July 1, 2018.

The judge, jailing Johnson for six months, said: "I reflect on the suffering and anguish the family have been through. Ultimately a child unnecessarily lost their life because of failures on your part to ensure you had appropriate risk assessments in place." Neither Johnson, nor Johnsons Funfair Ltd obtained safety instructions, prepared a specific risk assessment or had the trampoline certified by the ADIPS scheme, the Great Yarmouth Borough Council said. One other child, aged nine, was on the inflatable when it burst, but did not sustain “significant physical injuries.”

Nurse Beth, who attempted CPR, described the accident, saying: “She went up higher than my house, about 20ft.” A staff member from operator Johnsons Funfair Limited tried to catch Ava but was unable to reach her. Another girl on the trampoline, which “instantly” deflated, was uninjured after “skimming” across the sand.

GYBC, who prosecuted the case along with the Health and Safety Executive, were reported as having said: "The events of July 1, 2018 had, and continue to have, a devastating effect on the parents of Ava-May Littleboy and on the wider close-knit family. GYBC and HSE again extend their sympathies and condolences to all of the family of Ava-May Littleboy."

Oliver Campbell KC, for Johnson, said that Johnson and his wife "deeply regret" the incident and Ava-May's "tragic death". "He apologises sincerely to the court and the family for his failings," he said, adding that the company "ceased trading some time ago and will not trade again".
