'Even in Lytham, where you see Rolls Royce and Maserati's everywhere - even the people in Lytham are feeling the pinch'

Earlier this year, in February, Rishi Sunak told the BBC the burden on hard-pressed households is "starting to ease". The Prime Minister acknowledged the cost of living was the "most pressing problem" facing people across the UK.

Stating the business was "simply not sustainable on the high street any longer," Matthew is no stranger to changing times. The businessman was the owner of Hollywood Exports, a vintage clothing shop with sites in Clitheroe, Lytham, Hebden Bridge and Preston - all have had to close down. "They were discussing their mortgage and she said, oh gosh I can't believe it as it had gone up £300 or £400. She went to pay at the till and said, I can't buy it and put it back on the rail.

On social media, owners Jo and Fil stated bread is "the oldest of things" but recently, has become more of a luxury that only few can afford. The bakery stated they had become one of 83 businesses that will close on any one day, equating to 30,000 in 2024 alone. As well as a combination of monetary factors, a poor harvest has also knocked them back.

"This story is happening everywhere, all the time. It is only the artificial padding of our economies and the emptying of stockpiles that has kept things stable, but we expect this relative stability to begin to unravel. Prices will rise, harvests will fail, small business will pay the cost."On May 7, LancsLive reported the Family Bakery in Thornton-Cleveleys had announced its closure.
