Four men have been charged with slavery after dozens of people were found in the back of a van.

They were seen getting into the vehicle after arriving on a boat, prompting a police operation to stop the van. In total, 29 men, women and children believed to be from Vietnam were found by officers on the M5 in Cullompton.Today Frank Walliing, 72, from Colne, Jon Ransom, 63, from Kent, Keith Royston Plummer, 62, from Sheerness, and Glen Martin Bennett, 55, from Burnley, have been charged with human trafficking and assisting unlawful immigration to a member state.Police were called just before 7.

A British Red Cross spokesperson said: ‘Our volunteers have been supporting a number of people who are the alleged victims of human trafficking. We have been providing them with practical and emotional support at a rest centre while the police have been conducting their investigations. ‘Our volunteers are neutral and impartial and are concerned only with the welfare of the people affected.’
