The problem with being 45 in 2024 is that all of the people who showed me how to be 45 were born around 1950 , the first homes went online, the first appearance of yours truly. However, that was 45 years ago. Forty-five years! The difference is whiplash inducing. We’ve had our first overtly criminal prime minister; the internet, having risen, is increasingly shit; and I can’t stand up without my skeleton telling my brain that I’m an arsehole.
A nation’s accumulated trauma, fear and remorse concentrated down and drip fed into the bosoms of booming British babies. Resolute, stiff-lipped children who knew that emotions were the enemy and anything that blocked them out should be wholly welcomed.. Coke and weed had love songs written about them that charted. Think of your favourite ANYTHING from the late 60s and early 70s. Footballer? Musician? Artist? Comedian? Pissed, at least. All of them.
I mean, look at the Royal Family of the past. Absolutely spiked, morning, noon and night. It was a core tenet of why we loved them. The Queen Mum drinking pints, Prince Phillip’s Thursday Club and Princess Margaret’s midday vodka “pick-me-up”.
