Shocking video footage shows chaotic scenes breaking out following a derby match between Chorley and Southport FC. The game was marred by multiple incidents of pyrotechnics being thrown in the stands and onto the pitch, with officers from Merseyside Police called to the stadium during the first half.
Merseyside Police confirmed that a 29-year-old man from Adlington, Chorley, was arrested on suspicion of breach of the peace. Community Policing Sergeant Andy Dentith told LancsLive that an investigation into the disorder will involve the police working with both clubs. Community Policing Sergeant Andy Dentith said: "These were unpleasant scenes in full view of local residents and innocent match-goers, none of whom should have to experience such aggression, which clubs work so hard to eradicate from our sports grounds, and whose stewards do so much good work to minimise such issues.
He said: "It's great the support we've had but [...] we can't keep having these flares thrown on the pitch. That's not helping us. Helping us is doing what you did when you were supporting us, getting things going. Them flares, all they're gonna do is keep on getting us fined and fined and fined. It said: "Supporter safety is a key priority for all football clubs, and we at Southport Football Club are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that your matchday experience is safe and enjoyable. We therefore fully support all efforts to reduce and eradicate the use of flares, smoke bombs and pyrotechnics at matches."
