Merseyside will remember one of the region's true icons today as it marks a year since the death of Paul O'Grady.
The TV legend was a trailblazer in the industry, who shot to fame as Lily Savage and later became renowned for his self titled talk show and animal welfare programmes. Paul remained fiercely proud of his Merseyside roots throughout his life as he had a passion for social justice that meant he always used his voice to fight for important causes close to his heart such as animal rights and LGBTQ+ equality.
Paul's impact on Merseyside will always be remembered and his image now features in one of the region's most prominent positions on the banks of the Mersey. The mural is emblazoned on the Woodside Ferry Terminal and features Paul's face as well as his iconic drag persona, Lily Savage, on a leopard print background.
Paul was renowned as an animal lover and his final gift to the city was a generous £20,000 donation to rescue centre, Carla Lane Animals in Need. People across the region paid tribute to Paul's passion for animals on the day of his funeral last April.
