Judge Arshad, who was the first in her family to go to university, said she had"broken that stereotype" of what most people imagine judges look like and encouraged others, no matter what profession, to"aim high".
"Don't worry about what you look like, don't worry about not fitting into the mould, break that mould and achieve what you need to," she said. The mother of three, who has practised family law for more than 17 years, said she was"indebted" to her husband"who has supported me immensely" and given her"space to pursue my passion".
Judge Arshad, an expert in Islamic family law, said although the judicial office and appointments commission were doing their"absolute upmost", the judiciary"is still not diverse enough". Vickie Hodges and Judy Claxton, joint heads of St Mary's Chambers, said they were delighted about the appointment, which was"richly deserved" and"entirely on merit".
It’s an illusion to think islamophobia alone will protect western culture. How many muslims does it take to destroy a culture?
BintAmola18 what can you say
What could possibly go wrong?🤦♀️
I think it is a shame to appoint such people in such positions. I don't think these people are capable to handle such positions in a proper way.
Can I wear a bikini in court and be a judge doublestandards ?
I really don’t care what she wears as long as she is supporting the law of the land. Does bbcnews not see by highlighting this it’s making a non issue a central focus?
According to her God, she cannot even be a witness alone 😁 Here is the surah: 'bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. And if there are not two men, then a man and two women - so that if one of the women errs, then the other can remind her.'
BBCWorld and it starts...now they have a foot in the justice system, muslims will now take over your country, legally cause you empowered this TRAITOR to represent your country justice system, a person who has never ever ever even lived more than half her life in your country. fools
I don’t see this as a good thing. Surely a judge should appear neutral in all aspects.
BBCWorld How BBC presents the story matter most.. biased!
BBCWorld I don't think that she is the first Muslim woman judge in U.K. Neither first one wears hijab! I feel BBC is making it up, knowing this article will attract viewers.
I don’t see any issue with this altho I am not sure how great it will look with the wig on too 😊
...these are COVID-19 times, dear... you forgot the mask...
BBCWorld 。。。
BBCWorld You can't change Muslims. Especially those Muslims from middle East. Just don't try to change each other, things won't get wrong.
Never good to hear a judge say they want to be a trailblazer.
BBCWorld Everyone here is so upset about the hijab and I’m just sad that she’s not wearing one of those funny wigs
BBCWorld Long live the Islamic kingdom of Great Britain
Kirsty_Brimelow UK or Sharia law?
Just. F**k. Off 🙄
Very pretty with scarf.
BBCWorld Hijab is beauty of woman
Good luck
BBCWorld 😄😄😄😄😄😊😊😊
BBCWorld Mashallah
Your journalism is totally unimportant along with the news thread who gives a shit what somebody wears it’s the job that they do that counts it’s like talking about racism before there is an actual issue just to spark a row
night As long as she is not influenced by any form of religion and other countries laws..
Judges outfit is a dress code !!
night This is going too far because this what the ISIS are fighting for, this just show they have own
Oh here comes the Gammon fury.... And... GO!
BBCWorld जज साहिबा भी इतनी खूबसूरत होती है ? आँखों को यकीन नहीं हो रहा है!
Great progress! What a great future we are building in Europe! Feminists fighting for hijab... The Iranians must be laughing at us now.
BBCWorld No offense but Muslims will fight for right all over the world except in gulf. Wow
Islam governs her life, this will include her judgements too. We need the right to refuse her presiding over a court on religious grounds. I wouldn't trust her to be fair.
Saperlipopette! That's certainly brought the bigots out from under their fetid stones.
BBCWorld Trailblazing Sharia Law.
night She's a deputy district judge in a family court. They are ten a penny and there are many Muslims. Why is this news? Because of what she wears on her head. Simple as that.
BBCWorld There is no doubt that the second that she will have to choose between her believs or western law she will choose her believs. This makes promoting or appointing practicing Muslims to the role of a judge is dangerous. I hope I'm wrong for the sake of those who stand before her.
BBCWorld You got to be kidding me
BBCWorld It's a shame.
🙄🙄🙄
Just do the job
BBCWorld My grandma wearing same style..
imagine the biased judgement will be 🤦♂️👎.
BBCWorld Goody. The sad end of Judeo-Christian values that made us the beacon of freedom and envy of the world. Next stop...Sharia Law
BBCWorld MA SHAA ALLAH . May the Almighty Allah give you the wisdom to be fair and impartial to all who stand before your court. May you deliver your judgment with all sense of humor. May God Almighty bless the women
Since centuries the churches have not allow that the peruvian government teach lower classes to have only the kids their economy allows. Now we have a depressive population with a lack of basic needs.
In Quebec Canada this is not allowed and I agree with them. In Quebec public sector workers must show their full face. Some people say the law is racist but I disagree. If western people lived in a Muslim nation we have to follow their rules. So why can't folks follow west rules?
BBCWorld barakallah fiik yg mulia
This is wonderful progress 👏
Can she wear the wig over the top of the hijab?
That’s not hijab, that’s just a scarf. Hijab is to cover all face but eyes.
BBCWorld You are very smart and beautiful. Gives respect. I always respect women who respect themselves. The era of women with minimal clothes, is out of date. Immoral.
To those deadheads muttering about Shariah law. A Court judge in England has to take the judgment of the defendants peers in the jury . Whilst they CAN sum up in a way that influences the jury’s verdict ( as in the Profumo cases) they are bound by English law in sentencing.
One, is not amused.
BBCWorld Religious yahoos (any religion) shouldn't be in positions of importance in any society. How can someone who believes in absolutely ludacris ideologies be considered competent? If I told my boss I worship puff the magic dragon, I'd never get another promotion.
😂😂😂 I’m sure a persons faith wether they be Muslim or a god fearing catholic will have no effect on any judgement of anyone. But wait, doesnt a persons faith no matter what religion dictate their life. Explains a lot of dodgy sentences. Turn the other cheek 🙄
she actually looks like a queen, very pretty & innocent, hijab will save her from corona also
BBCWorld False belief systems lead to bad outcomes. This is a disaster. Shows lack of judgment.
Congratulations. Even though it shouldn't matter what you wear. Then again she is a muslim
BBCWorld Masha Allah
BBCWorld shame on you
I'd trust the judgement of a woman who believes that an invisible man in the sky wants her to cover her head so as to not excite strangers with hair fetishes.
Who cares what she wares... Well done and congrats on your appointment. Hard work pays...
Good luck
BBCWorld UK is surrendered IslamicState
BBCWorld Trailblazing= Shariah Law
... why can’t you behave like a modern citizen?
BBCWorld Chevrolet Trailblazer.
BBCWorld A tick in the box appointment? Hussar Merebimur.
BBCWorld Covering a woman from head to toe is truly progressive.
How could you take seriously the judgement of someone who allows their life to be destroyed by brainwashed belief in sky-fairies?
BBCWorld Such a victim mentality and this is now in an important position. Does she have no other noteworthy skills to promote ? Has the Arab world reciprocated by appointing a female British judge ?
The beginning of the end for this green and pleasant land.
BBCWorld She’s beautiful👆🏻💪🏻
BBCWorld Best wishes for your future
Look forward to a time when a persons race, religion, orientation and what they’re wearing isn’t a need for a headline. But props to this person being the first 👍
BBCWorld To be a 'trailblazer' she should have given up Hijab. Hijab is a symbol of Patriarchal society. She has achieved so much because she is living in non Islamic nation. Young Muslim women should give priority to their human rights. This will create path for equality.
BBCWorld UK should take your country back
Well to those haters We are conquering smoothly and quietly Deal with it
BBCWorld Wearing or not, justice is justice.
Welcome to ISIS
'Trailblazer' One that blazes a trail to guide others; a pathfinder. Let she be a guiding star and trend setter, GOOD LUCK.
Could you please produce an article about the first UK court judge to wear green socks?
Hijab is the promotion and willing participation of mysogeny, subjegation, dehumanization, contempt, enslavement, degradation, hate and rape of women since dawn of time.. pathetic to see such values advocated for in politics , giving new life and power to inequality
I really struggle with woman who feel it’s necessary to cover themselves from head to foot BUT I congratulate he and wish her every success in trailblazing for justice an equality, whether she wears a hijab or a tutu!
Law should not be mixed with religions....
There goes the neighborhood.🔪
BBCWorld Be brave to try new things. Don’t be afraid of failure. It shows you’re human. This life is not designed to be perfect. So failure teaches U there’s room to grow & become better. With every shortcoming,we can learn something.Your mistakes don’t define you what you do after does!
BBCWorld Keep religion and religious dress out of the courts!
Congratulations and best of luck. Still the hijab is a symbol of oppression.
Why is that an achievement? First muslim judge is an achievement, first female muslim judge is an achievement, first *insert ethnic origin* judge is an achievement? Why is wearing a piece of fabric an achievement?
funny how the feminists dont object to the Islamic treatment of wammin
Why is this news? Well done to her but this isn't media worthy just promoting hate to those less educated.
We love to point out the racism in America. But the replies to this comment show islamaphobia is a growing problem in UK. What did she do to be demonized like this? Bigots getting provoked by a successful Muslimah. You love to see it.
The edl right now
Insert standard Islamaphobic, sharia misquoting BS *here* COVIDIDIOTS covidtwat
I'd politics...
I always understood that the role of judges was to uphold the law and ensure that justice was done - nothing to do with trailblazing.
Not long now before Sharia is being implemented in our courts.
Good for her working hard and getting to the position she has done. What she is wearing is of no consequence.
What this lady is wearing means she can easily be identified as a woman. Wearing those whole body covering garments with only slits in for there eyes I still find offensive and dangerous as you haven't got a clue who is underneath them
so ScumMedia trying to incite race hate now 😡😡
Here's her first job
The reason I love this story is twofold, firstly because its great to see a hijab-wearing female UK court judge, and secondly because it will make the heads of Brexiteers literally explode.
If she gave a dodgy judgement you have the right of appeal
Just to add she looks fine and modest for the role as judge. However like I said I couldnt cover my head 24/7.
Just another human being from planet earth doing a job like the rest of us. Equal in every way like we all should be. I know it doesn’t work like that but why the need to emphasise. Am sure she will be a credit to the legal system. What she wears doesn’t make any difference.
Congratulations to her. So is she going to wear the wig on top of the hijab? Do you still have to swear on the bible? Is her religion relevant in anyway? Or are courts secular now?
The article is misleading. There have been at least three hijab wearing muslim ladies appointed prior as judges in England. Rosalyn Chowdhury appointed 16 years ago in 2006, Thaira Bibi appointed 4 years ago in 2016 & more recently Nawraz Karbani appointed in Feb 2020.
How do they get the opportunities many of us UK Christian or other have never had
Britain has lost its character, like mixing all your play dough together.
Is she going to bust those sex-groomers that are ‘her people’
FFS !!! WHAT AGENDA DO YOU WORK FROM AT THE BBC JUST SEE PEOPLE AS PEOPLE ... YOU ACTUALLY PROMOTE DIVISION BY SEPERATING PEOPLE BY THEIR LOOK ! AND THEN YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT RACISM AND HATE ! The sooner you are a subscription station the better !
Dont give a damn who the Judge prays to ... as long as she applies the law as intended and doesn't let her religion colour her judgements . Jobs a good un
I must admit some of the muslim dresses not the head scarf thing but dresses are growing on me. They are on amazon. The scarfs are okay too but I couldnt wear it every day like if I were ever muslim. I need a variety or break of styles. Sorry muslims and no I am not muslim.
Why do so many of you think she is oppressed? Just because she is wearing a scarf? How does clothing item shows the true intelligence and how liberal and positive a person is..all the best to you Raffia Arshad.. Road ahead won’t be so easy..warm wishes 💗
Great Britain lost its identity in the 1950’s. Now it’s just a multicultural mess...
It’s the Burka thats the concern , hijab looks quite nice.
Hoping FGM / Forced marriage and honour crime suspects get a fair trial then. As sadly the symbol of female religious oppression (to many) for me, would send out the wrong signal to the victim.
What gender is She He ?
Islam is right about women. 🤔
Off with their heads for all female adulterers.
Whilst reportable as this is a first (congratulations Mrs Arshad), its a shame that a) this is a first b) what someone wears is the focus c) that their religion is a key point. Focus should be on her qualifications, skills and experience. I wish her every success.
What happened to wigs ,British law and all that .
I am sure there will be a reasonable and rational response to this in the comments
Should judges be virtue signalers or even be known outside of a court room...
To bring back blasphemy laws.
...next will be BURKINI Court judge.!!
Because wigs are such a better look in Court
I always find it so bizarre when the hijab is promoted in the Western world as I am sure women in Muslim countries who try to rid themselves of this garment and in that process risking violence and prison will find it equally bizarre. So much for women's libs.
which laws will she be applying ? the laws of the land or sharia ? or will she introduce sharia interpretation and precedence over time ? or acknowledging a muslim defendant determine that UK laws don’t apply ?
Paitrarchy wins again
I do not care whether she wears hijab as long as she is a good and fair-minded judge, with respect for the UK law. I am sure she will be.
How will she judge homosexuals women’s rights and alcohol repeated cases
🤢
How does a Hijab relate to a Court Judge? common sense please !!
Let me know when hijab wearing women become movie stars!
