Motorists travelling along the A64, York Road, at around 9pm will likely have seen the incident. Crews got the blaze at The Old Red Lion under control with investigations now turning to the cause.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue confirmed they believe the cause of the fire was deliberate. Investigations are now ongoing and anyone with information can contact West Yorkshire Police.Any witness can provide information by calling 101 or through the live chat resource. The Old Red Lion, in York Road, Whinmoor, which dates back about 260 years, had its licence revoked in 2021 after a spate of violent incidents.
In recent months, there’s been discussions about fast food giant McDonald’s taking on the site. A statement, in the public consultation reads: "The site is an ideal location for a new drive-thru restaurant. The previously occupied public house has been vacant for some years, our proposals will bring the site back into use and demolish this derelict structure.
"Subject to planning approval, our proposals would provide a local restaurant in a convenient location for the people of Whinmoor and the surrounding area, helping to enhance food choices locally.”
