Sector faces challenge as study shows proportion directly pledging cash falls to 57%

Fewer people are giving to charity, in what researchers say is a worrying trend at a time when trust in charities appears to be falling.

I think it's a combination of things: Chuggers putting people off every day Less disposable income/ job insecurity Charities being seen as spending lots on admin I would give to a local foodbank not a national charity

When charities started to mug people in the streets, they lost me.

I wonder if the questionnaire asked participants if they could previously afford to give to charity but now couldn't or if they now needed charity when before they didn't. Also it would be good to ask if got fed up of charities continually putting up minimum donations

That might potentially be a good thing. In a truly civilised society no charity should exist. Governments should be there to support the needy via a fair taxation system not rely on handouts at the “whim” of individuals.
