Marketing tents as single-use should be stopped, festival organisers say, as efforts to cut down on plastic at events continues.

'Festival tents' should be banned to help prevent almost 900 tonnes of plastic waste each year, festival organisers have said.

A group of more than 60 independent festivals across the UK have urged retailers such as Argos and Tesco to stop marketing and selling tents as single-use items. An estimated 250,000 tents are left at music festivals across the UK each year. Many are not collected by charities and can't be recycled so instead end up in landfill sites.

The average tent is made largely of plastic and weighs 3.5kg - the equivalent of 8,750 straws. A four-man tent can be picked up on the high street for as little as £30.Mayor Gianni De Martino has approved an order banning from the municipality all single-use plastics that are not biodegradable The initiatives to stop the tents ending up in the tip come from the Association of Independent Festivals , who include festivals Shambala, Boomtown Fair and Boardmasters.

AIF’s 10-year report, published last year, found 10% of people attending events linked to their organisation had abandoned a tent during that year’s festival season. This works out as an estimated 875 tonnes of plastic waste - the equivalent of eight blue whales.

It's easier to throw them in a skip & moan about waste, than it is to recycle them. All about cost.

Fk it. Let’s just ban people, everyone stop breathing right now because we’re all ruining the country.... If people weren’t so greedy companies would stop their production and go green - but the big bosses wont because 🤑🤑🤑 so instead they blame the consumers.

What about banning plastic bags?

How many will they kill on the sites this year

Yes I agree they should be made of big sheets of paper and just pray it doesn’t rain

Maybe get them to have a little respect and not leave the site looking like Sangatte

If you completely removed Britain from the earth, it still wouldn’t make a difference in regards to climate change and pollution.

But why now and not last year or 5 years ago or even 10 years ago

But we’ll keep the plastic containers we get from the supermarkets which is by far more of an issue.

Cancel all festivals. Start up new ones where you can’t drink or eat in case rubbish is left and just sit and stare at trees while eating acorns. Comical

When we go to IsleOfWightFest we camp on loveyourtent site, campers are encouraged to keep site clean and take tents home - of which they do every time! We pay a deposit which is refunded as soon as your pitched area has been checked for any rubbish etc left.

Igloos are the way to go Hold all festivals in winter 😜

Always thought people were told to leave them there for charitable collection?

China, India, Russia etc. continue to pump millions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere and plastic into the sea but this is the hill the environmentalists choose to die on.

Only mud huts should be allowed😂😂

Y Not Festival in Derbyshire a few years ago. Appalling.

I maybe wrong however, I was under the impression that those tents left behind at festivals were taken down and sent abroad to countries that would benefit from these temporary shelters?

Steady. Tree hugging - dope smoking activists say do as I say not do as I do 🤔 Wonder if any one will be flying in for the events Hypocrites

Here’s an idea.... get the save the planet millennials to take them home with them Just a thought

Let's not beat about the bush here, we all know we can do better, we are doing better with recycling and educating the younger ones about the environment, it's the east and the likes of India who are the biggest culprits, those are the problem countries.

The modern reformers will never end their moralist crusade unless someone puts a stop to it, by force.

Oh just fuckin ban everything

The owners think they were going to charity, as I suppose the tons of rubbish they leave behind the same people on London Bridge and Friday school strikes, all kids drop rubbish both groups hypocrites, wannabe in my gang time, you see the mess put your own house in order first!

Tents should be made of paper! I am joking....just in case you didn't know. LOL!

Just festival tents? Not the tents of middle class families who go to snowdonia once then never speak of it again?

Yep ...... oh and here’s a thought 🤔. Dog poo bags 🤷‍♂️. You know the wee bag dog owners use to pick up 💩 and goes straight into land fill ☠️

Amen. Festivals are a landfill wasteland.

Does this mean all camping regardless of Festival or not is banned

That’s been decided by someone who’s never camped 5 nights at Download in the pissing rain

Might as well ban houses as well, imagine the waste in those.

And have people live in paper tents?

Meanwhile asian countries dump 90% of plastic to the rivers
