Pain is pain, and it should be taken seriously.

“It was horrific – absolutely horrific,” Cohen says frankly. “It took three attempts for them to fit it.” Beforehand, the nurse had held her hand, giving Cohen a clue that she might be in for some discomfort, but she was told that “paracetamol should be enough” by medical staff. This is in line withguidance, which describes an IUD as “a small T-shaped plastic and copper device that’s put into your uterus” to protect against pregnancy for “between five and 10 years”.

She’s far from the only woman to have had such an excruciating experience. After speaking with friends who recounted similar experiences of having an IUD fitted, Cohen launched a calling for more pain relief options for women before having one fitted.
